From development service to world service - world service workers from the Global South contribute their expertise, cultural and social background and productive otherness to the work of German church-based and non-profit NGOs in the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For the further development of processing and use of satellite-based data for project and impact monitoring as well as preparation and dissemination of project results, AGIAMONDO is seeking to fill the following position on behalf of OroVerde:

Your new role

The non-profit foundation OroVerde has been committed to the conservation of tropical forests for bio-diversity and climate protection for over 30 years. Projects are conducted in close cooperation with national organisations in partner countries and with local communities to improve living standards through alternative and sustainable land use and thus sustainably protect tropical forests. In Germany, OroVerde promotes understanding of global interrelations through educational and public relations work.
Both OroVerde and its partner organisations require GIS capacities at various points in its projects: cartographic analysis of the project regions during the planning phase, visualisation of the project measures for the public including maps during implementation, as well as GIS-based monitoring of project progress and analysis of the effectiveness of project measures.

These capacities are still being developed and OroVerde is striving to include the perspectives of its partner organizations to develop this field together. As a specialist from one of the partner countries (Mexico, Guatemala or the Dominican Republic), you can contribute important knowledge of local conditions in tropical countries.

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

  • You will assist in planning, structuring, creating and maintaining a GIS database for data collection and mapping.
  • You will analyse and process GIS data together with partner organizations.
  • You will visualise projects and project measures in the form of maps using a developed corporate design.
  • You will develop the capacities of partner organizations to use GIS programs in order to use their potential for project work.
  • You will support the development of a concept for longer-term impact monitoring using GIS data and applications.

Your Profile

  • You have a university degree in geography, forestry, agriculture or related subjects, for example.
  • You have at least two years of professional experience with a focus on the environment and development in Latin America or the Caribbean as well as an understanding of local conditions.
  • You possess good technical knowledge of GIS, including experience in the practical use of GIS programs as well as data preparation, interpretation and visualisation.
  • Ideally, you have expert knowledge and experience with other programs, scripting languages, formats and applications such as R, SQL/Python, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, GDAL, OGR, *.gdb, web GIS applications, etc.
  • You have at least a basic knowledge of German and are willing to develop this further (target level B1), as well as at least a basic knowledge of English.
  • Your life is centred in Guatemala, Mexico or the Dominican Republic. At the end of your stay in Germany, you will make your experience and networks available to partner NGOs in these countries.
