AGIAMONDO is the German Catholics' personnel service for development cooperation. In the Civil Peace Service, we offer professionals the opportunity for meaningful service in cooperation with local development actors. The Civil Peace Service (ZFD) is a personnel program for violence prevention and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions. It works for a world in which conflicts are settled without violence. Together with church and civil society partner organizations in Burundi, AGIAMONDO aims to contribute to civil conflict transformation there and to the sustainable equitable development of the country as well as the Great Lakes region through peacebuilding measures.

Social Scientist for Conflict Transformation and Reconciliation (m/f/d), Bujumbura, Burundi

                    

 

Your new field of activity - responsible and challenging:

The CDJP (Commission Diocésaine Justice et Paix) Bujumbura is a structure of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura.

It aims to promote justice and peace within the framework of Christian social teaching and accompanies processes of non-violent conflict transformation and reconciliation within the archdiocese. In doing so, the CDJP, as part of the archdiocese, sets signs for the protection of peace in Burundi and thus has an impact beyond the diocesan borders. The CDJP's work focuses on supporting and strengthening the capacities of the Justitia et Pax structures in the parishes as well as through a network of committed volunteers. In doing so, the CDJP is committed to the areas of peace and reconciliation, as well as human rights and social justice. Through your support, you will help to strengthen and further develop the work of the CDJP for peace, conflict transformation and reconciliation. You will participate in CDJP's coordination role in justice and peace work within the Archdiocese of Bujumbura. They accompany the capacity building of women staff and can thus make an effective contribution in the peace and reconciliation work of the Archdiocese in the context of a past burdened by violence.

Bujumbura is the economic capital and the largest city in Burundi. As such, it offers a good supply and infrastructure as well as a society characterized by diversity. At the same time, it has the calm and relaxed atmosphere of a rather small city on Lake Tanganyika.

 

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

 

  • As part of the team, you will accompany reconciliation processes in the context of a violent past, train and support CDJP staff*, pastors and community committees in the areas of reconciliation work, conflict management and non-violent communication.
  • In addition, you will share your knowledge of facilitation and training techniques with the CDJP team.
  • You will assist in the coordination of the CDJP network (community committees and other groups) and strengthen the organizational structures.
  • To develop and implement specific policies and strategies, you will provide your expertise and assist in the development and management of projects.
  • You will be responsible for the proper expenditure and management of funds in the field according to donor guidelines and AGIAMONDO's requirements. In doing so, you will work in partnership with CDJP Bujumbura.

Your profile

  • You have a degree in peace studies or social sciences, education or comparable.
  • You have relevant knowledge and professional experience in memory work, in dealing with a violent past and in conflict transformation.
  • Furthermore, you have knowledge in organizational development, project management or APME (analysis, planning, monitoring, evaluation).
  • Communication and consulting skills are among your strengths and you have diplomatic skills and intercultural communication skills for a culturally sensitive interaction with stakeholders.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken French; knowledge of English is desirable.
  • You identify yourself as a member of a Christian church, with the goals and concerns of church development and peace work, support these convincingly and are willing to participate in church life.
  • You have a class B driver's license and are an EU or Swiss citizen.
