AGIAMONDO is the personnel service of the German Catholics for Development Cooperation. In the Civil Peace Service (CPS) we offer development workers a meaningful role working with local development agents. The CPS is a personnel programme for peace-building and the prevention of violence in crisis and conflict regions. It sets out to promote a world in which conflicts are settled without violence. Working with church-related and civil-social partner organisations in Sri Lanka, AGIAMONDO aims to make a contribution towards civil conflict management and the sustainable and equitable development of the country through peace-building measures.

Social Scientist (m/f/d) for Interfaith Peace and Reconciliation Work, Colombo, Sri Lanka

                    

 

Your new role

Caritas SL - SEDEC is the national secretariat of the National Catholic Commission for Justice, Peace and Human Development of the Catholic Bishops' Conference in Sri Lanka and carries out its work in 13 dioceses. The focus is on civil peacebuilding, crisis prevention and conflict resolution, and human rights.
You will support Caritas SL - SEDEC and its diocesan specialised agencies in the implementation of a common strategy in the field of dealing with the past, reconciliation and non-violent conflict transformation, thus contributing to the consolidation of social structures and the development of a culture of tolerance and peace. In particular, contact, understanding and reconciliation are to be promoted between Sinhalese and Tamils and interreligious dialogue. Directly involved in a recognised church organisation, you will support the internal Caritas team in programme work and cooperation with the diocesan specialist agencies, strengthen networks between stakeholders, and establish and ex-pand violence prevention services in and with the communities. Together with your colleagues, you will strengthen constructive conflict management in the community and promote interreligious and interethnic dialogue.

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

  • You will support the management level in the development of projects and initiatives of peace and reconciliation work aimed at various target and population groups.
  • You will support the management in the further education and training of employees in project management.
  • You will accompany the programme staff in the impact-oriented implementation of the projects.
  • You will support diocesan project teams in designing and implementing programmes and achieving the intended impacts.
  • You will support the diocesan regional offices in project implementation, quality assurance and accounting.
  • Together with the management, you will promote sustainable networking with donors and partners.
  • You are responsible for the proper disbursement and administration of funds on site in accordance with the sponsor guidelines and AGIAMONDO specifications in close collaboration with Caritas SL - SEDEC.

Your profile

  • You have a university degree in social sciences, peace and conflict studies, religious studies, ethnology, political science, human rights and democratisation, or another field relevant to the job, with a focus on peace work and/or interreligious dialogue.
  • You have theoretical knowledge and several years of practical experience in methods of non-violent conflict transformation as well as peace and reconciliation work, and are familiar with the current state of the peace process in Sri Lanka.
  • You have already worked successfully in the fields of adult education or consulting and have a sound knowledge of organizational development and project management.
  • You have the diplomatic skills required to deal with stakeholders in a spirit of partnership and sensitivity in communicating with and accompanying women and young people.
  • You have a business-fluent command of English.
  • As a member of a Christian church, you identify with the goals and concerns of church development and peace-building work with a strong sense of conviction.
  • You are an EU or Swiss citizen.
