AGIAMONDO is the personnel service of the German Catholics for Development Cooperation. In the Civil Peace Service (CPS) we offer development workers a meaningful role working with local development agents. The CPS is a personnel programme for peace-building and the prevention of violence in crisis and conflict regions. It sets out to promote a world in which conflicts are settled without violence. Working with church-related and civil-social partner organisations in Uganda, AGIAMONDO aims to make a contribution towards civil conflict management and the sustainable and equitable development of the country through peace-building measures.

Trainer for Mediation and Offender Support in the Context of Land Conflicts (m/f/d),
Gulu, Uganda

Your new role

Our partner organisation Advance Afrika is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in 2012 in Gulu, which deals with human rights issues, conflict management and violence prevention. The NGO is particularly active in the reintegration of prisoners returning from prison to their communities. Its aim is to give courage and hope again to people who have experienced war and displacement and who believe that imprisonment has taken away their future. The sentences are often linked to escalated land conflicts. Through mediation and conflict counselling, Advance Afrika, working with social workers from the Ugandan prison authorities, prepares prisoners for a peaceful return to society and mediates between families on the ground. For peaceful and constructive conflict management, Advance Afrika also strengthens structures within villages and works with volunteer village members. The aim is to de-escalate conflicts and strengthen reconciliation, justice and the ability to deal with conflicts in a constructive way.

This report provides an impression of Advance Afrika. You can learn more about the work of the CPS development workers of AGIAMONDO in Uganda here.

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

  • You will offer advanced training in non-violent conflict resolution, in particular land conflicts.
  • You will facilitate communication between social workers and others involved in the reintegration process to strengthen the reintegration of former prisoners and the support and reconciliation of victims and offenders.
  • You will provide support in developing creative approaches and programmes for conflict management in northern Uganda and in implementing conflict-sensitive projects with prisoners in order to support them in peacefully returning to society.
  • In cooperation with Advance Afrika, you will conduct conflict-specific research on the connections between land conflicts, acts of violence and prison sentences.
  • You will be responsible for the proper spending and management of funds locally in accordance with the donor and AGIAMONDO guidelines. In doing so, you will work in partnership with Advance Afrika.

Your profile

  • You have completed a university degree in social work, law, psychology, political science, peace and conflict studies or a related field and have professional experience working outside of Europe, ideally in rural Africa.
  • You have theoretical and practical knowledge of peace work and civil conflict management and have experience working with highly marginalised and traumatised communities. Experience in victim-offender mediation would be advantageous.
  • You have professional experience relating to land conflicts. Ideally, you have already developed and implemented training concepts in this field.
  • You have experience in the field of social work with prisoners.
  • You can communicate in fluent English, verbally and in writing.
  • You are an EU or Swiss citizen and identify with the goals and concerns of church development and peace work.

Corona - Information about the selection procedure

Dear applicants,

even in the current situation, we are happy to accept your application via the online application portal. We are currently conducting the selection procedure online. We also offer our preparatory courses as digital services.

At present, no development workers are travelling abroad. We hope that the global situation will improve from the summer onwards and that we will be able to make a responsible decision, together with our partners, to have development workers on the ground working on projects again.
